Open Doors Day / Natalia Kondratenko / Eneli Valge

Saturday 13.11.2021 / 14:00 – 16:30

You are welcome to the Copper Leg Art Residency Open Doors Day at Rae Schoolhouse, an event where artists Natalia Kondratenko and Eneli Valge will present their artworks.

Natalia Kondratenko was born in 1989 in Domodedovo (Russia), studied video art at the Rodchenko art school and photography at Moscow polytechnical college of Mossovet. Now she is currently based in Tallinn, Estonia.
Most often Natalia uses mockumentary self-portraits with personal things and objects created by using various techniques and materials. The most frequent topic is duality (for example, the duality of man as a being created by nature and formed by society and technology), the formation of a new mythology, the relationship of modern with ancient, technologies with magics.

At Copper Leg Art Residency, she works with black and white photography and experimentalizes with engraving on stones found near the site. Created objects refer to the idea of the relationship between the digital and physical worlds, the consumption of virtual services, and their impact on the real environment.

Eneli Valge, a freelance artist and designer from Tartu. Lived and worked in Tallinn from 1991 to 2018. She received her art education at the Tartu Art School, defended both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Estonian Academy of Arts, and improved her professional skills at the Department of Visual Arts and Design at the Utrecht University of the Arts in the Netherlands.
Eneli has been working as an artist since 2003. She has made installations and conceptual objects, curated exhibitions and organized art projects, created illustrations, book designs, and murals, participated in exhibitions both in Estonia and elsewhere. Worked as an art teacher and lecturer. Long-time copying of historical portraits in a Finnish private manor. Dedicated to digital processing and oil painting in recent years.
To the Copper Leg Residency, she came to look for isolation in order to focus and start painting the works of the next solo exhibition. The exhibition project deals with light in space – an interior or a city space that is designed by a human. Space is also the inner state of man. The artist’s desire is to create inner peace, a state of silence, a halt in time in the viewer. Four paintings are completed at Copper Leg, where a large empty studio with large windows brought the creator to the right wave. In addition to trying to capture light and shadow in her work, she is inspired by a quote from Goethe – where there is a lot of light, there are also strong shadows. There will be a sad emptiness in the paintings of the exhibition at first glance, the viewer will be in the room as if alone. Light comes from somewhere and a shadow falls. But something creates emotion in this fluid and makes you wonder – what’s going on here!? However, the artist leaves it to the viewer to meditate.

Open Doors Day / Katrin Essenson / Anne-Mai Heimola / Danel Rinaldo

Saturday, December 19, 2020
14:00 – 17:00 Open doors day at Copper Leg Art Residency /
Art presentations by Anne-Mai Heimola, Katrin Essenson, and Danel Rinaldo.

Anne-Mai Heimola lives and works in Tallinn. After graduating from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a degree in scenography, she has been working as a decorator, prop maker, costume designer, and artist at the Estonian National Opera, the Drama Theater, the Von Krahl Theater, the Russian Theater.
She heard about Copper Leg Art Residency from friends, it being a very inspiring place to face and align one’s inner sounds of the soul. The works of former residents, which sound gently in the surrounding fields, are colorful proof of a suitable environment.
The artist’s inner drive is to paint and Copper Leg fuels her creativity by 150%.

Katrin Essenson is a performing artist, director, and dancer. She has graduated from the Choreography Department of Tallinn University. In addition, she studied interdisciplinary arts at Estonian Academy of Arts and is currently obtaining a master’s degree in cultural theory and philosophy.

In the performing arts, she has been interested in questioning the self-evident situations in socio-cultural understandings. Throughout different topics she has dealt with portraying the subjective experience of being human in solo and group performances; has created soundscape works, belongs to the group “As if the woman is at home” and has been a co-author to documentaries “Control!!!” and “As if the woman is in a documentary”. In the art field, she is fascinated to in exploring the conflating processes of fictional and documentary realities.

In Copper Leg residency she dealt with the development of “dreamworker” concept in an installative setting and systematized the scenaristic notes to documentary film and sound materials collected a few years ago in a road-trip to Russia.

Danel Rinaldo (b. 1984) is a photographer whose roots lie in Pärnu, but nowadays is residing between Southern Estonian forests and fields. He received his bachelor’s degree in Photography at the University of Falmouth in Great Britain. He enthusiastically practices analog photography, but the digital camera is his main tool. He has passed on his experience in the field and knowledge to photography enthusiasts in schools and youth centers, ran a print lab and photo store, and has worked in a photo studio. He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions in Estonia, Finland, England, and Scotland.

As a photographer, he is most fascinated by the person, under whose skin, with the help of the camera’s eye, he attempts to crawl. Through visual aesthetics he often challenges the observer by raising questions about social issues, assuming the observer relates and asks questions about personal, religious, political, environmental, and ethical matters. BEAUTY/ ILU. does not go unnoticed.

At Copper Leg Art Residency he mainly focuses on “Neeme” – a portrait story, that emerges from underneath the red safelight of the darkroom. Juxtaposing analog processes with digital video.

Raul Keller’s photo exhibition + Post Horn live

Saturday 04.07.2020 at the Copper Leg Art Residency
14:30 Opening of Raul Keller’s photo exhibition
15:00 Post Horn live

Raul Keller is an Estonian interdisciplinary artist working with site-specific improvisation since 2000 both in performative and installative context. He has focused on radiophonic experiments and text, lo-fi technologies, and DIY cultures with an emphasis on the process. In 2014 Keller filled the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia with a total sound installation with his solo show What You Hear Is What You Get (Mostly) and in 2019, a site-specific installation Girl In The Sewer was arrested and taken custody from the entrance of the same institution.

In recent years he has focused on performing as a solo artist on modular synthesizers and with a free impro noise duo Post Horn (w/ Hello Upan), generating and publishing text and keeping experimenting with analog photography.

For Copper Leg Art residency he built a darkroom enlarger to be used with his mobile phone and decided to make a test series from moving images. Three small series have emerged from that process that will be presented, although the digital origins have mostly already vanished from the pieces.

Post Horn is a free impro noise duo with Raul (modular synthesizers, objects, percussion) and Hello (electric violin, objects, loopers) regarding the origins of their collaboration in a Project Unison album DOHC from 2004. Working together from 2007 with Katrin Essenson, they formed the trio LokaaRaadio for radiophonic experiments on stage that gave performances in various settings traveling as far as Sao Paolo Biennial in 2012 as part of the festival radio project. In 2017 the project reformed as a duo and renamed themselves Post Horn (after the horns of Jericho) and published their first LP Pacific MKDKVNL0035. At Vaskjala concert they will be making a public recording for their upcoming LP at the end of this year

Exhibition opening / Ekaterina Bykova & Evgeny Umansky

Opening of the exhibition on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 6 pm in Metropol Gallery, Vana – Kalamaja 46, Tallinn, Estonia.

Exhibition “Jews in Metropol” by Ekaterina Bykova and Evgeny Umansky

The exhibition presents autonomous projects of artists created at different times but united in the Metropol gallery by one theme. The photo installation of Evgeny Umansky and the object-album-photobook of Ekaterina Bykova are literally not about Jews, but rather about the artistic view of these people. The viewer will not see directly the life or traditions of the Jews on the images, but only a strange kind of reflection on this topic – from hooligan graffiti and pseudo-documentation to narrative human stories looking for their place of life – a temporary residence – and only metaphorically resembling the Jewish theme of “eternal” wandering.

Evgeny Umansky (RUS)
Artist and curator who lives and works in Kaliningrad, Russia.
His artistic interests include exploring and criticizing modern society and working with different social contexts. In his creativity, he uses the already existing aesthetic expression and artistic reflection of anonymous authors (graffiti and street art, as well as mass media, advertising techniques), creating his own interpretation of the source material.

Ekaterina Bykova (RUS)
Ekaterina Bykova is an artist from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. In her practice she uses photography as the main medium, combining it with sound and text. Her works mostly focused on routine, memory, everyday life and our relationship with each other and things that surround us.
During the Copper Leg Residency, she works on a new book about people, who can’t find their own place under the sun.

Open Doors Day / Tamar Lewinsohn & Anastasios Veloudis

Sunday, September 22, 2019
3 pm – 6 pm Open Doors Day at the Copper Leg Art Residency
4 pm Opening of the exhibition by Tamar Lewinsohn & Anastasios Veloudis.

You are welcome to visit the Copper Leg Art Residency this Sunday and open our new residents’ exhibition at Rae Schoolhouse.

Tamar Lewinsohn (ISR)
Tamar is an Israeli artist who focuses on photography as her primary medium.

Her work explores the manual aspects within the photographic medium and the relationship between photography, printmaking and drawing.

Tamar is currently working on an ongoing photographic project “NOTHING IS TEMPORARY” during her residency at Copper Leg. This project explores the basic elements of photography in search of poetic meaning and potential.

The paper and print are heavily concerned as an integral part of the work. She is interested in finding new ways of exploring the printmaking process in the darkroom which will emphasize the unique aspect of a singular copy within the photographic medium.

https://www.tamarlewinsohn.com/

Anastasios Veloudis (GRC/GBR)
Anastasios Veloudis is an Greek origin interdisciplinary designer and visual artist working and living in London. He studied fine arts, structural engineer design, graphic design and received his master’s degree in digital media arts from the University of Brighton.

His art practice has been constantly drawn towards abstraction and non-literal, metaphoric forms working with a variety of tools, from acrylic and paper collage to photography and video. Duality is ever-present in his work – combining dynamic geometrical shapes with organic free-flowing forms as a result of action painting.

During the Copper Leg Residency, he is exploring the potentials of found and discarded materials from around the area with which he is intended to create a new visual narrative. The creative process is a perpetual effort to take advantage of any spontaneous, irrational outcome arising from his practice in order to transmute it to a source of inspiration.
