Silkscreen Workshop

Have a light-colored T-shirt or another textile item that could need a fresh look? Ever wanted to learn what screen printing is all about?
This Workshop is perfect for Beginners who have little to no previous screen printing experience.
In your time with us, you will learn all about the various materials and practices involved in the screen printing process, we will give you a hands-on tour of our workshop and darkroom, help you create your own printing screen, and finally print your chosen design on fabric.
Join us at Rae schoolhouse, and expect a hands-on, fun-filled day full of creative experiments!

Alexandra Nima

Alexandra Nima (Anima) is an Austrian born, interdisciplinary artist living and working in Estonia. As a creative hybrid, she works at the intersection of psychology, visual arts, and technology.

Since 2008, she has created various archetype-inspired textile suits, written over 1.000 pages of English-speaking lyrics, and experimented with broadcast media via public tv performances in Austria, Estonia, Australia, and Germany.

In 2010, her Bachelor’s thesis- written for a business degree- was requested to be featured in Kunsthalle Baden-Baden’s research library on women in the arts.

In recent years, she has expanded her textile work, incorporating wearable electronics into her designs, aimed at a broader, digital-interactive type of performance.

At Copper Leg Art residency, she is crafting an interactive dress, that will be triggered via remote, public voting. In addition, she will conduct a screenprinting workshop at Rae Schoolhouse on October 10.

Rodolfo Liprandi

Rodolfo Liprandi (b. Trieste 1994) it’s an Italian sculptor who graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland, where he currently lives.

A close union, a dialogue between man and nature takes place in Rodolfo Liprandi’s environmental art and Land Artworks, site-specific interventions of an installation feature that pay homage to the wild world.

The works created by assembling the branches collected in the surrounding environment, subject to the passage of time and weather conditions, participate in the cyclical nature of life to finally rejoin the earth.

From 2018 Liprandi has started various collaborations with entities such as nature reserves, associations, and festivals, creating installations with the aim of raising awareness and educating the viewer to respect and protect the nature that surrounds us.

To the delight of the inhabitants of Vaskjala, he created two statues, “The Guard of the Wormhole Road” and “The Crowned Head”, depicting several significant animals related to Estonian stories and myths, as well as the local area.

John Grzinich

John Grzinich (US/Estonia) has worked since the early 1990s as an artist and cultural coordinator with various practices combining sound, moving image, site-specificity, and collaborative social structures. He has performed and exhibited in North/South America, Europe and Japan and his compositions have been published on a host of international labels. The focus of his work in recent years has been to combine sound and listening practices with various media to challenge age old anthropocentric perceptions of the world we inhabit. He is currently a visiting Associate Professor of New Media in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Estonian Academy of Arts and a visiting professor of Sound Design at RISEBA University in Riga.  

Wind Harps or Aeolian Harps made by John are analog devices, weather responsive, instruments that make air movement audible. The wind harps at Copper Leg Art Residency are designed to respond to a wide variety of conditions such as wind speed and direction. These conditions in turn affect the tonality, harmonics and loudness of the sound. The open field is an ideal context to which the harps dynamically respond with varied sounds, encouraging the listener to broaden their sensory experience of this environment.

Late Summer MiniFest

In the last week of August, we will respectfully set off the soon-to-end summer with art and music. The musical part of the one-day mini-festival is curated this time by the Estonian Electronic Music Society and Taavi Kerikmäe, under whose surety the ensemble EMA will perform, several improvisations are expected to take place and Hans Gunther Lock, Villem Jahu, Raul Keller will perform with electronic solo performances.

The artistic part is fulfilled by the summer residents of Copper Leg Art Residency, John Grzinich with wind harps and a sculptural object by Rodolfo Liprand. In the twilight of the attic, Janno Bergmann generates cosmic associations with his exhibition “Cosmic Kitchen”.

NB! In addition to all this, Copper Leg Art Residency is celebrating 3 years of activity on that same midweek day, hip-hip, hurray!

Raul Keller’s photo exhibition + Post Horn live

Raul Keller is an Estonian interdisciplinary artist working with site-specific improvisation since 2000 both in performative and installative context. He has focused on radiophonic experiments and text, lo-fi technologies, and DIY cultures with an emphasis on the process. In 2014 Keller filled the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia with a total sound installation with his solo show What You Hear Is What You Get (Mostly) and in 2019, a site-specific installation Girl In The Sewer was arrested and taken custody from the entrance of the same institution.

In recent years he has focused on performing as a solo artist on modular synthesizers and with a free impro noise duo Post Horn (w/ Hello Upan), generating and publishing text and keeping experimenting with analog photography.

For Copper Leg Art residency he built a darkroom enlarger to be used with his mobile phone and decided to make a test series from moving images. Three small series have emerged from that process that will be presented, although the digital origins have mostly already vanished from the pieces.

Post Horn is a free impro noise duo with Raul (modular synthesizers, objects, percussion) and Hello (electric violin, objects, loopers) regarding the origins of their collaboration in a Project Unison album DOHC from 2004. Working together from 2007 with Katrin Essenson, they formed the trio LokaaRaadio for radiophonic experiments on stage that gave performances in various settings traveling as far as Sao Paolo Biennial in 2012 as part of the festival radio project. In 2017 the project reformed as a duo and renamed themselves Post Horn (after the horns of Jericho) and published their first LP Pacific MKDKVNL0035. At Vaskjala concert they will be making a public recording for their upcoming LP at the end of this year

Copper Leg Art Residency is situated 18 km from the center of Tallinn in the village of Vaskjala in an old school building surrounded by fields. It is a popular meeting place for creative people, visual artists, musicians, and writers. It’s a location of natural beauty, which allows one to escape the noise of the city and focus on one’s work. Tallinn Biennial’s day at Vaskjala is filled with incredible experiences and memorable performances.

Opening of the summer season / Sound Art / Copper Leg Cookbook

We will start our summer season with a sound art event where the list of performers is very dignified, and sound bathing should satisfy more refined tastes. Completely composed works will be performed, as well as more performative, accrual and snappy sound bouquets. In addition, we are pleased to present the Copper Leg Art Residency Cookbook, a catalog that summarizes the residency’s activities in 2017-2018. Better late than never!

Mattia Cleri Polidori (ITA)

Mattia Cleri Polidori is an Italian artist based in Rome. He graduated in painting at Accademia di Belle Arti of Rome and Wimbledon College of Arts in London.

His research is focused on the relationship between form and matter. He collects natural images and objects which develop into paintings, etchings and sculptures. At the nucleus of his work is the process through which the golden ratio organizes matter throughout the space-time fabric. The relief of the surface interacts with the stratification of several layers of paint.

During the Copper Leg residency program, he will realize 10 soft-ground etchings on zinc plates and 10 paintings on paper from the series “Gli Elementi del Disastro”. This series is created with locally collected natural finds such as burnt wood, lichens, and bones.

Giulia Cacciuttolo (ITA/GBR)

Giulia’s research and practice are focused on investigating memory and, more specifically, on contemporary archives and archival forms and how we relate to them in order to hand down our histories to the next generations. She is interested in understanding the dynamics and tensions between individuals, communities and the relationship with their past, in particular with the people in charge of the selection of what will be ‘officially’ remembered.

How many histories have been discarded from this selection and then forgotten? Are we condemned to analyze and present the past from just a single point of view? Is there a more ‘sustainable’ way of relating to the past? Have we ever really taken the time to question what – or whose – version of the past we carry with us?

Giulia’s theoretical research has always been accompanied by a strong technical and visual practice interested in exploring the role of images and sculptures around these themes.

Through the use of different techniques of printing on various supports – latex, silk, and wax among others –, analog photography and different casting techniques with jesmonite and plaster, she investigated the physical relationship between memory, space, and landscape.

During Copper Leg Art Residency, she has been investigating the relationship between the inside and the outside, between organic and man-made traces of memory. Working with casting and cyanography, she will attempt to create a dialogue between different layers of time and memory in a landscape where the contrast between natural and artificial is so strong.

Budhaditya Chattopadhyay (IND/DEU)

Budhaditya Chattopadhyay is an Indian-born media artist, researcher, and writer, currently living and working in Berlin. Focusing on sound as the primary medium, Chattopadhyay produces large-scale installations and live performances broadly dealing with contemporary issues, such as the climate crisis, human intervention in the environment and ecology, urbanity, migration, decolonization, and race. Chattopadhyay is a Charles Wallace scholar and Prince Claus grantee; he has received several fellowships, international awards and participated in several residencies. Appearing in numerous exhibitions, concerts, conferences, and festivals, Chattopadhyay’s works have been shown and heard across the globe. Chattopadhyay’s scholarly and creative writings regularly appear in leading peer-reviewed journals and magazines internationally.

For Copper Leg Residency, Budhaditya will be working on a book The Auditory Setting, in addition, he performs at the Copper Leg residency open doors day and participates in the Tartu Üle Heli Festival, performing a new sound work.
