Sunday, September 22, 2019
3 pm – 6 pm Open Doors Day at the Copper Leg Art Residency
4 pm Opening of the exhibition by Tamar Lewinsohn & Anastasios Veloudis.

You are welcome to visit the Copper Leg Art Residency this Sunday and open our new residents’ exhibition at Rae Schoolhouse.

Tamar Lewinsohn (ISR)
Tamar is an Israeli artist who focuses on photography as her primary medium.

Her work explores the manual aspects within the photographic medium and the relationship between photography, printmaking and drawing.

Tamar is currently working on an ongoing photographic project “NOTHING IS TEMPORARY” during her residency at Copper Leg. This project explores the basic elements of photography in search of poetic meaning and potential.

The paper and print are heavily concerned as an integral part of the work. She is interested in finding new ways of exploring the printmaking process in the darkroom which will emphasize the unique aspect of a singular copy within the photographic medium.

Anastasios Veloudis (GRC/GBR)
Anastasios Veloudis is an Greek origin interdisciplinary designer and visual artist working and living in London. He studied fine arts, structural engineer design, graphic design and received his master’s degree in digital media arts from the University of Brighton.

His art practice has been constantly drawn towards abstraction and non-literal, metaphoric forms working with a variety of tools, from acrylic and paper collage to photography and video. Duality is ever-present in his work – combining dynamic geometrical shapes with organic free-flowing forms as a result of action painting.

During the Copper Leg Residency, he is exploring the potentials of found and discarded materials from around the area with which he is intended to create a new visual narrative. The creative process is a perpetual effort to take advantage of any spontaneous, irrational outcome arising from his practice in order to transmute it to a source of inspiration.

Open Doors Day / Takashi Ikezawa + Jarek Lustych

Sunday, August 18, 2019
19:00 – 21:00 Open Doors Day at Copper Leg Art Residence + Takashi Ikezawa & Jarek Lustych art objects presentation.

Two new artists in our art residency have been working hard and now we invite you to participate in the opening of their art objects on this Sunday at 19:00.

Also visitors can see in the vicinity of Rae School House the installations and outdoor objects from the previous artists in residency, Federica Cogliandro & Giulia Lanza (ITA), Shishkin – Hokusai (RUS), Tanel Saar & Art Container (EST), Simon Whetham (GBR), Alexander Kamelhair (USA), Chad Stayrook (USA), Noolegrupp (EST).

Takashi Ikezawa
Takashi started as a copperplate engraver and printmaker. He lives in the suburbs of Tokyo and has been working as the director of the Tsukuba Art Center since 2013. He was a victim of 2011.11.3 Fukushima and was born between the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb memorial days. Therefore, he has had a desire for human peace since childhood.

In recent years, he has worked on many outdoor installations, creating works on the theme of nature and symbiosis. At Copper Leg Art Residency, he is creating an art piece titled “Mind Arrow”. This work is inspired by the Japanese archery target. A traditional Japanese archery target made from charcoal is centered around the flagpole, the flag reproducing the target of Japanese archery. It represents Mother Earth and Father Sky. An arrow has been released from Father Sky.

Jarek Lustych
Jarek is a Polish visual artist who for the past twenty years has been creating mostly for and with specific sites. However, amid a hailstorm of global unbridled production, he is embarrassed to add any new objects to this excess. His work usually explores existing entities, sharing authorship with them. They are not just a background, but they become an active component of a piece of art. By using their unique properties, his projects aim to manifest imperceptible aspects of the environment.

At Copper Leg Art Residency, he is acting as a curator for nonhuman entities. Jarek has prepared an instrument to evoke the voice of Pirita river, believing that by having its own song the river is a subject with rights and that this awareness makes it difficult to use violence against it – hence towards nature in general.

Bartosz Janczak / Sculpture opening

Friday 28 July
18.00 Opening of Bartosz Janczak’s Sculpture in front of Rae Culture Center
18:30 Introduction of Bartosz Janczak’s art at the Rae Culture Center

Bartosz Janczak
Bartosz is a designer with a decade of experience, recently escaping from the computer screen into public spaces, where he’s creating sculptures. He is originally from Poland, but lives and works mostly in London.
His structures are inspired by military defense structures, brutalist architecture and eastern block monuments. His objects are aggressors, they are tearing apart the air with it’s edges, other times they are bonded in a deadlock. Visually his art is very raw in it’s approach and posture. Heavy, blocky shapes interact with each other, intertwined in light and soft-spoken compositions. Always white, gives the audience a resemblance of antique in an almost spiritual experience.

During a stay at Copper Leg Art Residency, he is focused on creating a monument of devotion for the new world’s society. Inspired by mythology and a vast variety of Estonian beings, deities and legendary heroes he decided to create an altar responding to moods of modern civilization and it’s abstract world of manufactured needs.

Kim Jurek
Friend of Bartosz, half-Catalan, and semi-German, lives and works near Barcelona. Kim is also a sculptor, but this time supporting friend Bartosz as an assistant and engineer of his sculpture built during Cooper Leg Residency. Kim mainly is focusing on his art on working with wood, metal, and stone.

Everyone is welcome to open the sculpture at the Rae Cultural Center on Friday 18.00!

At the Copper Leg Land Art Center was set up the installation “Passthrough”, that binds together the local name magic here, the underground cemetery from the beginning of the second millennium, the paganist world perception and the theory of relativity. In the schoolhouse, the same experience is visualized on another scale by the installation object displayed only on the opening night.

Art group Vedelik (EST)
Vedelik (Eng. Liquid) is one of the longest-lived art groups in Estonia’s contemporary art scene. The name selection meeting was held in 1995 at the Pegasus Cafe, with four participants. Since then, the group has regularly issued magazines and calendars, organized performances, meetings with interesting people, sports competitions, courses, meetings, trips, etc. In addition, music has been made (a disc for Liquid Electronics) and the group has also taken part in weddings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7zVUXhbFHo). Spring, autumn and other exhibitions have also been regularly held. In foreign relations, two main directions have been presented – Finnish and Irish. Group membership is diverse, innumerable and fluid.

Alexander Kamelhair (EST / USA)
Alexander is a metal artist from the United States of America, Texas. His work is largely material and process-based. He is particularly interested in the physical properties of materials and comparing their qualities with conceptual and formal negative space. Existential and ontological problems are a recurring motif in his practice.
He is currently finishing his MA studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn, where his work is inspired by research on the relationship between object-oriented ontology, alchemical practice, and Jungian psychology. Recent projects make very specific technical reference to traditional Estonian woodwork.
At Copper Leg Art Residency he is preparing a piece of land art “Five Railroad Sleepers Dreaming on a Gravel Bed”. Aesthetically, this work refers to works by American minimalists and site-specific artists such as Donald Judd and Carl Andre.

Open Doors Day / Robert Atwater & Rusudan Khizanishvili exhibition openings

Saturday 06.04.2019
15:00 – 18:00 Open Doors Day at Copper Leg Art Residency
15:30 Robert Atwater (New York, US) photography exhibition opening
16:30 Rusudan Khizanishvili (Tbilisi, GE) paintings exhibition opening

You are invited to explore the residency space and to participate in two exhibition openings at the Rae School House.

Robert Atwater
Robert is a North American fine art photographer, printmaker, and book artist from New York. During his career, he has used virtually every film camera format. Today, he still exposes film with a medium format camera, but also digitally captures images with a digital camera, iPhone and drone.

Upon arriving at Copper Leg Art Residency, his primary goal was to create a photographic narrative about Estonian landscape and its peoples’ effect and use of it. A subtext of that narrative was to look at abandoned Soviet-era architecture that still dots the Estonian landscape.

Rusudan Khizanishvili
Rusudan is a painter from Georgia, Tbilisi. Her paintings are mostly figurative, expressive and colorful. At Copper Leg Art Residency she decided to use the plot of the Estonian epic Kalevipoeg for her works.

It was very interesting for her to find similar details in the Georgian The Knight in the Panther’s Skin and Estonian epos, as well as their features and differences. As in the Georgian and the Estonian versions, the main character fights the image of the Devil in various ways, and with the help of his faithful friend and companion eventually defeats him.

Exhibition “Siberian Souvenirs” by Johanna Rannula

Johanna Rannula finishes Copper Leg Residency with a photography and object exhibition called Siberian Souvenirs. It will be opened on on the 25th of March at 6 PM at the Rae Culture House. It is also the 70th anniversary of the 1949 deportations in Estonia.

Stories of six people who spent their childhoods in Siberia and now live in Rae parish will be exhibited. Raivo, Erna, Saima, Rünno, Olga and Heikki, as well as their things tell the story of deportations through the eyes of young people. The artist employed ethnographic methods and collected the objects, personal things that these people have brought back from Siberia and still hold on to. If and how do these objects tell stories? Do the stories fade as their owners pass away? While the society commemorates with stone monuments, the artist is interested in personal monuments – the physical objects which tell personal as well as universal history, and the relationship between the two.

Johanna Rannula holds a masters degree in urbanism from the Estonian Academy of Arts and has been on expeditions to Siberia with a group of art academy alumni. In photography, she uses an anthropological perspective and focuses on a documentary approach. Johanna works at the Tallinn City Museum.

The opening of the exhibition will also be a commemoration event that will be attended by the people who are portrayed in the exhibition. The exhibition will stay open from the 25th of March until the 25th of April.

ANITA GRATZER
Anita is a photo artist from Austria, she has been in recent years, mainly visiting art residencies in Japan, Korea, and China. For her analog black-and-white photographs, she has developed photo staging style which involves Asian clothing costumes made out of calligraphy books. In the configuration of her portraits, she stages portable paper sculptures, masks, and moulages, symbiosis from beeswax and religious texts, which as knowledge prostheses offer the protagonists camouflage, protection, and chance for allegorical incarnation.

At Copper Leg Art Residency she starts her project “Zeitgeist” using on-site footage for her creation of an out of time “Wunderkammer” which serves as a basis for black-and-white analog portraits of local residents.

NIKITA FAUVEAU & MARTYNA KOSIARZ
Nikita Fauveau and Martyna Kosiarz are two visual artists based in France (Paris) and Poland (Wroclaw). They met during their Erasmus stay at the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2017, and are reunited for the Copper Leg residency as an artist duo. Most of their art practice includes video-, photo- and site-specific installations, drawings, and tiny sculptures. Both focusing on examining their experiences, they are currently leading a research project about the overwhelming feeling of hugging. Hugging in the meaning of tenderness, silent dialogue, (self)care, the all-embracing feeling of warmth.
