Ulvi Haagensen

Ulvi Haagensen is an Australian-Estonian artist, born in Sydney. She has been living and working in Tallinn for many years and is currently doing her Ph.D. in artistic research at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

Ulvi’s art practice and research is multi-disciplinary and combines installation, sculpture, drawing, performance, and video to explore the connections and overlaps between art and everyday life.

She came to Copper Leg Art Residency to focus on cleaning, as a type of performance and to look at the actions of cleaning and the tools we use. But as often happens, plans change. And though she has made some cleaning tools and filmed herself cleaning, she has also been drawing, thinking about drawing, and looking at animal and human footprints and tyre tracks in the snow. These lines of prints, crossing, and overlapping, make very large and beautiful collaborative drawings.

Open Doors Day / Niina-Anneli Kaarnamo art presentation

Niina-Anneli Kaarnamo art presentation, vinyl records played by Misha Panfilov, surprise performers, the celebration of the jubilee of Rae Cultural Center.

Niina-Anneli Kaarnamo (born. 1978) is a Finnish artist and producer, currently working in the fields of culture, art, and entertainment in Tallinn.
She has a BA in culture and art producing, has studied sculpture in Slovakia, and finished her MA in Estonian Academy of Arts.

At Copper Leg Art Residency Kaarnamo has done snow research, worked with basic forms, memories, and landscape. Her approach and tools are playfulness and observation, to look – to see. By reorganizing the familiar, we allow ourselves to see the new.

Wandelweiser is a composers and performers collective founded in Berlin in 1992 by Antoine Beuger and Burkhard Schlothauer, who created this word – which means, literally, “change wisely” [wandle weise]. They are soon joined by other international composers including Jürg Frey (CH) and Michael Pisaro (USA), who are also well-known today as the pioneers of this collective, as well as the most active and interesting among them.

The music of Wandelweiser is deeply connected to silence – which sometimes takes up more space than sounds – and uses often a clear sound material (harmony, rhythm or even melody) within extended durations. The atmosphere is therefore generally very soft and quiet. This reveals the environment in which the music is played: each performer is a part of the space as much as the objects around them. The conception of time change for the audience – as much as for performers -who can focus on every small details or evolutions of the music.

The accordion is the center of this concert. The first piece offer a rather vertical music, where the accordion and the flute overlap like a chorale. On the other hand, the second piece is more horizontal: the melody of the accordion is followed by the sound of the cello, as a single line. In the last one, the line is broken in several blocks of sounds, words, movements or silence, and the experience of time is totally discorded.

Art presentations by Anne-Mai Heimola, Katrin Essenson, and Danel Rinaldo.

Anne-Mai Heimola lives and works in Tallinn. After graduating from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a degree in scenography, she has been working as a decorator, prop maker, costume designer, and artist at the Estonian National Opera, the Drama Theater, the Von Krahl Theater, the Russian Theater.
She heard about Copper Leg Art Residency from friends, it being a very inspiring place to face and align one’s inner sounds of the soul. The works of former residents, which sound gently in the surrounding fields, are colorful proof of a suitable environment.
The artist’s inner drive is to paint and Copper Leg fuels her creativity by 150%.

Katrin Essenson is a performing artist, director, and dancer. She has graduated from the Choreography Department of Tallinn University. In addition, she studied interdisciplinary arts at Estonian Academy of Arts and is currently obtaining a master’s degree in cultural theory and philosophy.

In the performing arts, she has been interested in questioning the self-evident situations in socio-cultural understandings. Throughout different topics she has dealt with portraying the subjective experience of being human in solo and group performances; has created soundscape works, belongs to the group “As if the woman is at home” and has been a co-author to documentaries “Control!!!” and “As if the woman is in a documentary”. In the art field, she is fascinated to in exploring the conflating processes of fictional and documentary realities.

In Copper Leg residency she dealt with the development of “dreamworker” concept in an installative setting and systematized the scenaristic notes to documentary film and sound materials collected a few years ago in a road-trip to Russia.

Danel Rinaldo (b. 1984) is a photographer whose roots lie in Pärnu, but nowadays is residing between Southern Estonian forests and fields. He received his bachelor’s degree in Photography at the University of Falmouth in Great Britain. He enthusiastically practices analog photography, but the digital camera is his main tool. He has passed on his experience in the field and knowledge to photography enthusiasts in schools and youth centers, ran a print lab and photo store, and has worked in a photo studio. He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions in Estonia, Finland, England, and Scotland.

As a photographer, he is most fascinated by the person, under whose skin, with the help of the camera’s eye, he attempts to crawl. Through visual aesthetics he often challenges the observer by raising questions about social issues, assuming the observer relates and asks questions about personal, religious, political, environmental, and ethical matters. BEAUTY/ ILU. does not go unnoticed.

At Copper Leg Art Residency he mainly focuses on “Neeme” – a portrait story, that emerges from underneath the red safelight of the darkroom. Juxtaposing analog processes with digital video.

Tim Sullivan is a London based artist, researcher, and lecturer currently researching for his Ph.D. at the University of Westminster on Photography, Theory, and Poiesis. His area of interest is in film, photography, and fine art practice. During his time at Copper Leg Art Residency, he has been working with video and photography, found objects and people. The residency has allowed him valuable time to address his thinking around his key themes of fact and fiction, the material world, and our often unmet desires for contemplation and connection.

Aili Vahtrapuu is an artist and a long-term art pedagogue, born, raised in Tallinn, and spent the summers of his childhood in Assaku, Rae municipality. She studied sculpture at the Estonian Academy of Arts, continued his master’s studies at the University of Paris VIII, and defended his doctoral dissertation at the Pantheon Sorbonne University in Paris, France.

In the Copper Leg Art Residency, the artist continues his experimental series of rust imprints “Cut” and translates into Estonian her doctoral dissertation, on the relationship between sound objects and urban space.

Silkscreen Workshop

Alexandra Nima

Alexandra Nima (Anima) is an Austrian born, interdisciplinary artist living and working in Estonia. As a creative hybrid, she works at the intersection of psychology, visual arts, and technology.

Since 2008, she has created various archetype-inspired textile suits, written over 1.000 pages of English-speaking lyrics, and experimented with broadcast media via public tv performances in Austria, Estonia, Australia, and Germany.

In 2010, her Bachelor’s thesis- written for a business degree- was requested to be featured in Kunsthalle Baden-Baden’s research library on women in the arts.

In recent years, she has expanded her textile work, incorporating wearable electronics into her designs, aimed at a broader, digital-interactive type of performance.

At Copper Leg Art residency, she is crafting an interactive dress, that will be triggered via remote, public voting. In addition, she will conduct a screenprinting workshop at Rae Schoolhouse on October 10.

Rodolfo Liprandi

Rodolfo Liprandi (b. Trieste 1994) it’s an Italian sculptor who graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland, where he currently lives.

A close union, a dialogue between man and nature takes place in Rodolfo Liprandi’s environmental art and Land Artworks, site-specific interventions of an installation feature that pay homage to the wild world.

The works created by assembling the branches collected in the surrounding environment, subject to the passage of time and weather conditions, participate in the cyclical nature of life to finally rejoin the earth.

From 2018 Liprandi has started various collaborations with entities such as nature reserves, associations, and festivals, creating installations with the aim of raising awareness and educating the viewer to respect and protect the nature that surrounds us.

To the delight of the inhabitants of Vaskjala, he created two statues, “The Guard of the Wormhole Road” and “The Crowned Head”, depicting several significant animals related to Estonian stories and myths, as well as the local area.

John Grzinich

John Grzinich (US/Estonia) has worked since the early 1990s as an artist and cultural coordinator with various practices combining sound, moving image, site-specificity, and collaborative social structures. He has performed and exhibited in North/South America, Europe and Japan and his compositions have been published on a host of international labels. The focus of his work in recent years has been to combine sound and listening practices with various media to challenge age old anthropocentric perceptions of the world we inhabit. He is currently a visiting Associate Professor of New Media in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Estonian Academy of Arts and a visiting professor of Sound Design at RISEBA University in Riga.  

Wind Harps or Aeolian Harps made by John are analog devices, weather responsive, instruments that make air movement audible. The wind harps at Copper Leg Art Residency are designed to respond to a wide variety of conditions such as wind speed and direction. These conditions in turn affect the tonality, harmonics and loudness of the sound. The open field is an ideal context to which the harps dynamically respond with varied sounds, encouraging the listener to broaden their sensory experience of this environment.
